Softball Recap: Newberry Picks Up Third Consecutive Victory

Newberry extended their winning streak to three on Monday, bumping them up to 3-0. They narrowly escaped with a victory as the team sidled past the Bronson Eagles 6-4. This was payback for the Panthers, who suffered a 4-1 loss the last time these two teams met.

Sarah Burns made a splash no matter where she played. She pitched four innings while giving up just one earned run off one hit. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than two walks any time she's pitched this season. She was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in three of her four plate appearances with two RBI. Those two RBI gave her a new career-high.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Tristan Layfield, who got on base in two of her four plate appearances with three stolen bases and two runs. That's the most stolen bases she has posted since back in March of 2025. Another player making a difference was Kora Crudup, who went 1-for-2 with one run, one double, and one RBI.

As for Bronson, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 2-2-1. Even worse, they were so close both times: the defeats came by an average of only 1.5 runs.

On Bronson's side, Brystal Howard was cooking despite her team's loss, going 1-for-2 with two runs and one double. That double marked the first that Howard has hit this season. Makenna Dean was another key player, going 1-for-4 with two RBI and one double.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Newberry will face off against Williston at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. As for Bronson, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Union County at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
