Montgomery and Northwest Area are an even 3-3 against one another since November of 2019, but not for long. The Red Raiders will be playing at home against the Rangers at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The two teams are strolling into their matchups after big wins in their previous games.
Northwest Area will be up against a hot Montgomery team: the squad just extended their winning streak to four. Everything went the Red Raiders' way against Muncy on Friday as they made off with a 27-7 victory. Considering the Red Raiders have won four games by more than 19 points this season, Friday's blowout was nothing new.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Northwest Area). They blew past Sayre, posting a 62-6 win.
Northwest Area found their leader in sophomore Shane Hempel, who rushed for 121 yards and two TDs on only five carries. Hempel has become a key player for the Rangers: the team is 2-1 when he posts at least 80 rushing yards, but 0-3 otherwise. The team also got some help courtesy of Loegan Diltz, who rushed for 32 yards and a pair of scores.
Northwest Area didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. In fact, those interceptions all came courtesy of defensive juggernaut Ben Bonham. He is also on a roll when it comes to total tackles, as he's now made six or more in each of the last 12 games he's played dating back to last season. Northwest Area received some extra help from Bonham, whose fumble return for a touchdown made for one of the most unforgettable moments.
Special teams played a big role in the game for Northwest Area, adding 12 points to the final score. The biggest highlight from special teams (and perhaps the team as a whole) came courtesy of Diltz, who ran a kickoff back for a touchdown.
Northwest Area picked up their first home victory, bumping their record up to 2-4. As for Montgomery, their win bumped their record up to 5-1.
Everything came up roses for Montgomery against Northwest Area in their previous meeting back in October of 2024, as the squad secured a 45-8 victory. Do the Red Raiders have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Rangers turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
