Softball Game Preview: Appomattox County Raiders vs. Altavista Colonels

Appomattox County has gone a perfect 10-0 against Altavista recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Friday. The Raiders will venture away from home to challenge the Colonels at 5:30 p.m. Appomattox County will aim to continue their three-game streak of scoring more runs each match than the last.

Appomattox County barely beat Amherst County the last time the pair played, but that sure wasn't the case this time around. The Raiders were the clear victors by a 7-0 margin over the Lancers on Wednesday. The Raiders' hitters stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most runs they've scored all season.

The result came thanks to Chloe Vaughan's shutout, as she gave up just two hits and racked up seven Ks. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in four consecutive appearances.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Bailey Hamilton, who scored a run and stole a base while going 3-for-4. What's more, she posted three RBI, the most she's had since back in May of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Regan Sheilds, who scored a run and stole a base while going 2-for-3.

Meanwhile, Altavista came out on top against William Campbell on Wednesday by a score of 7-4 (the very same score they lost by in their prior game). The win continues a trend for the Colonels in their matchups with the Generals: they've now won four in a row.

Appomattox County's record now sits at 4-1. As for Altavista, the victory got them back to even at 2-2.

Everything went Appomattox County's way against Altavista in their previous matchup back in May of 2024, as Appomattox County made off with a 10-0 win. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Raiders since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
