Football Recap: Yuma Catholic Skates Past Apollo with Ease

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Yuma Catholic). They breezed past the Apollo Hawks to the tune of 44-14 on Friday. Perhaps unsurprisingly given the team's high-flying offense, the game also marked the team's biggest win of the season.

Nash Ott was his usual excellent self, throwing for 339 yards and three touchdowns while picking up 11.7 yards per attempt, and also rushing for 53 yards. Those 53 rushing yards gave him a new career-high. Yuma Catholic also got help from Wesley Porter, who showed off his sure hands for 98 receiving yards.

Yuma Catholic's run defense was locked in: Apollo could only muster 2.5 yards per carry. The team can thank Shaun Carter for the heroic effort on defense: he. Yuma Catholic didn't have any issues in that department, having averaged 10.8.

Yuma Catholic's defense didn't let Thomas Williams, get away unscathed either: they got into the backfield for three sacks. Sahid Verdugo was particularly dangerous to the passing game, picking up two himself. Carter was another major factor on D, making 15 total tackles and defending one pass.

Defeat or not, Apollo got some senior leadership from Mila Chieg and Williams. Chieg picked up 214 receiving yards and one TD, while Williams threw for 317 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Those 214 receiving yards set a new season-high mark for Chieg.

The victory (which was Yuma Catholic's fourth in a row) raised their record to 4-4. The wins came thanks in part to their defensive effort, having only surrendered 10.8 points on average over those games. As for Apollo, they dropped their record down to 2-6 with the loss, which was their fourth straight on the road.
