Preview: Gruver Greyhounds vs. Sunray Bobcats
The Gruver Greyhounds will head out on the road to face off against the Sunray Bobcats at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
Gruver had already won two in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 13 points), and they went ahead and made it three on Friday. They took their matchup at home with ease, bagging a 51-7 win over Vega. With Gruver ahead 31-0 at the half, the match was all but over already.
Briggs Satterfield continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines, throwing for 229 yards and three touchdowns while completing 76.9% of his passes. Michael Mccloy was another key contributor, picking up 138 receiving yards and two touchdowns.
Meanwhile, Sunray had already won five in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 60.2 points), and they went ahead and made it six on Friday. They put the hurt on Boys Ranch with a sharp 34-12 win. Given Sunray's advantage in MaxPreps' Texas football rankings (they are ranked 361st, while Boys Ranch is ranked 1139th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Arnold Mendoza and Armando Lujan were among the main playmakers for Sunray as the former gained 173 total yards and a touchdown and the latter threw for 337 yards and four touchdowns. Lujan is on a roll when it comes to passing touchdowns, as he's now passed for three or more in the last six games he's played. Sunray also got help from Dawson Bennett who showed off his sure hands for 114 receiving yards.
Their wins bumped Gruver to 6-2 and Sunray to 7-1.
Gruver was taken down by Sunray 56-12 in their previous matchup back in October of 2022. Can Gruver avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
