Basketball Recap: Cesar Chavez Takes a Loss

Cesar Chavez extended their losing streak to eight on Monday, dropping them down to 1-8. They were six points away from ending the streak, but they lost a 58-52 heartbreaker at the hands of the Gilbert Tigers. While losing is never fun, the Champions can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Arizona basketball rankings (they are ranked 194th, while the Tigers are ranked 38th).

As for Gilbert, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won six of their last seven contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 8-2 record this season. While they didn't have the best season last year (they finished 10-15), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past.

Gilbert's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Adam Medina, who almost dropped a double-double with 13 points and nine rebounds. Medina is also on a roll when it comes to shooting accuracy, as he's posted one of at least 55% in the last four games he's played. Cruz Kazmierski was another key player, putting up ten points.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Cesar Chavez will get a bit of extra time to process the defeat as their next game is a ways off. They'll take on Highland at 7:00 p.m. on January 8, 2026. As for Gilbert, they will head out to face off against Tucson High Magnet School at 3:45 p.m. on Thursday.
