Softball Game Preview: Steele Canyon Cougars vs. El Capitan Vaqueros

The Steele Canyon Cougars are taking a road trip to challenge the El Capitan Vaqueros at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Steele Canyon will be looking to extend their current five-game winning streak.

Steele Canyon had to skate by with only a one-run margin when they last took the field, which might have inspired the 12-run drubbing they dealt Ramona on Tuesday. The Cougars were the clear victors by a 16-4 margin over the Bulldogs. The Cougars not only won on Tuesday, but they posted their biggest win since March 10th (when they won 17-0).

The team relied heavily on Kendall Drake, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with four RBI, two runs, and one double. Those two hits gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Hailey Trujillo, who got on base in all four of her plate appearances with two runs and one RBI.

They weren't the only ones making solid contact: Steele Canyon kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 13 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least eight hits in three consecutive matchups.

Meanwhile, El Capitan got themselves on the board against Academy of Our Lady of Peace on Monday, but Academy of Our Lady of Peace never followed suit. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 1-0 win over the Pilots.

Not much got past Addison Higuera, who gave up just six hits to keep Academy of Our Lady of Peace off the board.

On the hitting side, El Capitan's victory was truly a team effort as four different players contributed at least one hit. One of them was Kylee Frazier, who went 1-for-2 with two stolen bases.

El Capitan is on a roll lately: they've won seven of their last nine contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 12-13 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.8 runs on average over those games. As for Steele Canyon, their record is now 14-11-1.

Steele Canyon couldn't quite get it done against El Capitan in their previous matchup back in April as they fell 11-7. Can the Cougars avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
