Football Recap: Manheim Central Starts Season with Win Against West Philadelphia

Manheim Central took care of business in their home opener on Friday. They snuck past the West Philadelphia Speedboys with a 47-42 victory. The final result isn't all that surprising considering the Barons' considerable advantage in MaxPreps' Pennsylvania football rankings (they are ranked 99th, while the Speedboys are ranked 262nd).

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Manheim Central to victory, but perhaps none more so than Logan Kappel, who rushed for 57 yards and one score, and also threw for 60 yards and one TD. Caleb Moyer was in the mix as well, providing the Barons with two touchdowns.

Manheim Central didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off three passes before the game was over. It was truly a group effort as Ryan Wissler, Isaiah Oxceva, and Jayvior Morales picked up one apiece. Manheim Central received some extra help from Cody Hess, whose fumble return for a touchdown made for one of the most unforgettable moments.

West Philadelphia lost despite a true team effort on offense. The best among them was Ahmeir Green, who threw for 407 yards and four TDs while picking up 15.7 yards per attempt, and also rushed for 30 yards. He also deserves a shoutout for his performance on D, picking up three sacks and making six total tackles. Neelaj Armstead also helped out as he racked up 140 receiving yards.

Manheim Central didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next match, a 17-6 defeat against Ephrata on the 29th. As for West Philadelphia, they also wasted no time getting back out on the field and have already played their next contest, a 40-6 loss against Sussex Central on the 29th.
