Football Preview: Waverly Vikings vs. McCook Bison
After starting their season with two straight games on the road, Waverly is finally coming home. They will be defending their home-fieldthey go up against the McCook Bison at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
Last Friday, Waverly ended up a good deal behind Seward and lost 35-21.
Even though the team lost, they still had their share of impressive performances. One of the best came from Carter Mcmillan, who rushed for 87 yards on only 12 carries, and also threw for 156 yards and a touchdown. The dominant performance gave him a new career- in total yards.
Meanwhile, McCook didn't have too much trouble with Aurora at home on Friday as they won 33-14. The Bison pushed the score to 33-7 by the end of the third, a deficit the Huskies cut but never quite recovered from.
Tristan Campbell was a one-man wrecking crew for McCook as he rushed for 254 yards and three touchdowns while picking up 8.5 yards per carry. The team also got some help courtesy of Ethan Schmidt, who rushed for 77 yards and a touchdown.
McCook's defense was in the mix too, especially the secondary: they snagged three passes before it was all said and done. It was truly a group effort as Ty Junker, Quentin Terry, and Gabe Roberts picked up one apiece. With that strong performance, Roberts is now averaging an impressive 5.5 total tackles per game.
Perhaps unsurprisingly given the score, McCook was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 339 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 174 rushing yards in five consecutive matches dating back to last season.
Waverly's loss dropped their record down to 0-2. As for McCook, their win bumped their record up to 2-0.
Waverly didn't have too much breathing room in their matchup against McCook when the teams last played back in November of 2018, but they still walked away with a 36-30 victory.
