Flag Football Recap: Maricopa Comes Up Short

Maricopa had lost six straight on the road dating back to last season, but on Thursday they dropped down to 0-6 to make it seven. They were dealt a 42-7 defeat at the hands of the Arizona College Prep Knights. The Rams were in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 28-7.

Victoria Johnson threw for 199 yards and one TD. Larissa Lopez Gutierrez was her top target, picking up 103 receiving yards and one touchdown.

As for Arizona College Prep, they have been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 5-2 record this season. Given their advantage in MaxPreps' Arizona flag football rankings (they are ranked 35th, while Maricopa is ranked 111th) , the win wasn't entirely unexpected.

Arizona College Prep's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Mariela Navarrete led the charge by throwing for 142 yards and five touchdowns while completing 81.8% of her passes. Nora Whittington was Navarrete's top target, picking up 119 receiving yards and three scores.

Maricopa wasted no time getting back out on the field and has already played their next matchup, a 45-0 loss against North on the 21st. As for Arizona College Prep, they also didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next game, a 34-13 defeat against Gilbert on the 18th.
