Softball Recap: Effingham Takes a Loss

It's hard to turn regular season success into postseason wins, a fact Effingham can now relate to. They fell just short of the Carbondale Terriers by a score of 9-7 on Wednesday. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest defeat the Hearts have suffered since April 8th.

Saige Althoff spent all nine innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered four earned (and five unearned) runs on 13 hits.

At the plate, Jerzi Bierman was cooking despite her team's loss, going 4-for-5 with three stolen bases, three runs, and one double. She is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as she's now snagged at least one in each of the last three games she's played. Another player making a difference was Ryley Engel, who went 2-for-5 with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI.

Effingham is on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 23-9. As for Carbondale, the victory (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 11-12.

As of now, neither Effingham nor the Terriers have any future games scheduled.
