Baseball Recap: Martinsville Artesians vs. Decatur Central Hawks

Martinsville extended their losing streak (dating back to last season) to 17 on Thursday, dropping their season record down to 0-16 in the process. They came up short against the Decatur Central Hawks, falling 10-0. The Artesians were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Hawks apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in May of 2024.

As for Decatur Central, they have been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 13-8 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.7 runs on average over those games.

For Decatur Central's part, they got a great performance from Brayden Smith as he kept things locked down with no earned runs or hits while striking out seven over five innings pitched.

At the plate, Logan Markus was incredible, going a perfect 3-for-3 with one home run, five RBI, and two runs. That's the most hits he has posted since back in May of 2024. Another player making a difference was Gauge Sprague, who got on base in all three of his plate appearances with two runs and one RBI.

Coming up, Martinsville will host Bloomington South at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. Decatur Central will be paying especially close attention to the Artesians' game: after the Artesians face off against the Panthers, they'll take on Decatur Central again at 6:00 p.m. on Friday.
