Basketball Recap: St. Mary's Piles Up the Points Against Rye

St. Mary's game on Thursday was close up to the half, which is when they kicked things up a notch. They really took it to the Rye Thunderbolts for the full four quarters, racking up a 76-42 victory. The Pirates have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won five contests by 21 points or more this season.

St. Mary's got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Cruz Artaechevarria out in front who went 9 of 13 en route to 22 points and five steals. Artaechevarria is trending in the right direction considering he's improved his point production for four straight games. The team also got some help courtesy of Jeremiah Starr, who went 8 for 16 on his way to 24 points.

St. Mary's was working as a unit and finished the game with 19 assists. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Rye only posted 13 assists.

Despite the loss, Rye had strong showings from Isaiah Guzman, who posted 14 points and five assists, and Eli Guzman, who had 12 points and seven boards. That's the most assists Isaiah has posted since back in December of 2023.

The victory was the fifth in a row for St. Mary's, bringing their record for this year to 5-3. Those victories came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 69.8 points per game. As for Rye, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 3-5.

St. Mary's has already played their next matchup, a 70-61 defeat against Banning Lewis Academy on the 22nd. As for Rye, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next game, a 60-50 loss against Colorado Springs Christian on the 22nd.
