The Frontier Regional Red Hawks are taking a road trip to face off against the Taconic Thunder at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The two teams are strolling into their matches after big wins in their previous games.
Frontier Regional came out on top against Mount Greylock Regional on Friday thanks in part to the team's impressive nine-run seventh inning. The Red Hawks put the hurt on the Mounties with a sharp 15-1 victory. Considering the Red Hawks' hitters had been struggling lately, the high-scoring outing was a much-needed turnaround.
Raine Wonsey was a major factor no matter where she played. She didn't allow a single earned run while striking out 12 over seven innings pitched. Wonsey was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI.
In other batting news, Skyler Steele was a standout: she went 3-for-4 with one home run, three runs, and four RBI. Sophia Pinardi also deserves some recognition as she launched her first home run of the season.
Frontier Regional was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .405. They are a perfect 4-0 when they post a batting average of .375 or better.
Meanwhile, while Taconic put up plenty of runs on Monday, the same can't be said for Drury. The Thunder were the clear victors by a 12-0 margin over the Blue Devils. Considering the Thunder have won three contests by more than 11 runs this season, Monday's blowout was nothing new.
Like Frontier Regional, Taconic also got a great game from a two-way player: Cheyann Goddard. She looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run and allowing only one hit over five innings pitched. Goddard has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up a single earned run in three consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going a perfect 3-for-3 with four runs, three RBI, and two doubles. Those four runs gave her a new career-high.
In other batting news, Taconic let Ella Stodden and Kylie Duhamel run wild. Stodden went 2-for-4 with four runs and one triple, while Duhamel went 2-for-3 with two runs, two RBI, and one double. With that strong performance, Stodden is now averaging an impressive 2.1 runs per game. The team also got some help courtesy of Maddie Harrington, who went 2-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.
The win got Taconic back to even at 5-5. As for Frontier Regional, their victory ended a three-game drought on the road and puts them at 6-4.
Taconic's hitters will have their work cut out for them on Tuesday. Frontier Regional has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7.5 strikeouts per game. It's a different story for Taconic, though, as they've been averaging only 4.1 strikeouts. Will Frontier Regional keep running through batters, or will the Thunder buck the trend?
Frontier Regional took their win against Taconic in their previous meeting two weeks ago by a conclusive 12-5 score. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Red Hawks since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
