Basketball Preview: Socorro Bulldogs vs. Canutillo Eagles
The Socorro Bulldogs will look to take advantage of their home-court for the first time this season as they take on the Canutillo Eagles at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Hopefully Socorro focused on turnovers this week as the team gave up 28 on Friday.
Socorro is headed into their home opener looking to turn things around after starting their season on the road. They took a 36-27 hit to the loss column at the hands of Burges. The Bulldogs just can't catch a break and have now endured 19 defeats in a row dating back to last season.
The loss doesn't tell the whole story though, as several players had good games. One of the most active was Giselle Medrano, who earned 18 points along with three steals. She is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last four games she's played dating back to last season. The team also got some help courtesy of Sarah Molinar, who had three points in addition to seven rebounds.
Even though they lost, Socorro smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 15 offensive rebounds. That's the most offensive rebounds they've posted since back in December of 2023.
Meanwhile, Canutillo couldn't capitalize on their home-court advantage in their season opener. They were outmatched by Eastwood at home and fell 68-16. The Eagles haven't had much luck with the Troopers recently, as the team's come up short the last four times they've met.
Socorro skirted past Canutillo 56-54 in their previous meeting back in December of 2022. One of the biggest obstacles trying to stand in the way of that victory was Canutillo's Kimberly Cruz, who went 8 for 18 en route to 24 points plus six rebounds and four steals.
