Basketball Recap: Lejeune Comes Up Short

Lejeune was not able to break out of their rough patch on Friday as the team picked up their ninth straight defeat. They were outmatched by the Southside Seahawks and fell 63-32. If the Devil Pups were looking for revenge after losing 51-11 to them when the teams met, then they'll just have to keep looking.

Despite the loss, Lejeune saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Madison McQueen posted 14 points in addition to six rebounds and five steals. McQueen has been hot, having posted two or more steals the last six times she's played. Another player making a difference was Tiara Davis, who scored nine points and six boards.

Southside's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Tamya Smith led the charge by going 9 of 14 on her way to 20 points along with five rebounds and three steals. That's the most points Smith has posted since back in January of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of I'Kiriyah Minor, who went 5 for 11 en route to 14 points and six boards.

Lejeune's defeat dropped their record down to 1-12. As for Southside, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won eight of their last nine games, which provided a nice bump to their 10-4 record this season.

Lejeune will challenge Northside - Pinetown at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Northside - Pinetown will roll in looking for their fifth straight win, something Lejeune surely won't give up without a fight. Southside has already played their next contest (against East Carteret), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing.
