2A Conference 9 recap December 3, 2013
Monroe was able to crack the Top 25 in the state rankings this week after defeating East Lincoln. The Redhawks came in at 24 in the state poll after placing at number 27 last week.
Monroe added to the longest winning streak in 2A Conference 9 this week by beating the Mustangs, 34-13. This was the team's ninth consecutive win.
Grey Wyrick threw for 227 yards and 3 touchdowns. He went 8-15 with 0 interceptions.
Chase Bryum was the best running back in the league this week. In 31 carries, he ran for 143 yards as the Redhawks bested East Lincoln. Teammate Zephaniah Wall added to the ground attack by rushing for 40 yards.
Parkwood's Wyrick and Sam Mobley led the league in both passing and receiving yards. 6-1 quarterback Wyrick has thrown for 1,754 yards this season, while Mobley has 52 catches for 968 yards. Bryum from Monroe leads the league in rushing with 1,451 yards.
The top two teams in 2A Conference 9 will face off this week when first place Monroe takes on second place Parkwood. The Redhawks beat Mike Byus' team last week, while the Rebels bested Huss.
In 138 carries DeShawn Morrison has accumulated 957 yard this year.
Parkwood's Mobley is a few successful plays short of surpassing 1,000 yards receiving this season. He needs only 32 receiving yards against Monroe to hit that benchmark. He has recorded 52 catches for 968 yards this year.
There should be lots of points scored when the Redhawks and Lynn Coble's team face off this week. The top two offenses in the league, Monroe comes in having scored 486 this season, while the Rebels have scored 370. The Redhawks scored 34 points last week as they defeated the Mustangs.
Parkwood moved up to 112 from 144 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in the league. The Rebels climbed the ranks as a result of beating the Huskies 24-14.
