Football Recap: Benjamin Coyle Leads a Balanced Attack to Beat Jasper

Shepherd's game last Friday was a loss, but they didn't let that memory haunt them on Friday. They blew past the Jasper Bulldogs 32-7. The high-flying offensive performance was a huge turnaround for the Pirates considering their six-point performance the contest before.

Shepherd's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Benjamin Coyle, who rushed for 110 yards and one touchdown on only ten carries. Coyle got the majority of those rushing yards when he took off on a run that went for an incredible 67 yards. Landen Dellinger also helped out as he racked up 112 rushing yards.

They were just one part of a punishing run game: Shepherd was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 324 rushing yards. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Jasper only rushed for 56.

Shepherd's defense stepped up as well, laying out the QB 5.5 times. The heavy lifting was done by Michael Weekes and Brayden White, who racked up four sacks between them.

Shepherd pushed their record up to 7-1 with the victory, which was their fourth straight on the road. Those road wins came thanks in part to their defensive effort, having only surrendered 11.3 points on average over those games. As for Jasper, they are on a six-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 1-7.

We've got plenty of inter-district action coming up soon. Shepherd will face off against rival Hamshire-Fannett at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Meanwhile, Jasper is set to challenge their familiar foe Silsbee at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
