Baseball Recap: Las Cruces Triumphs

Eight must be Las Cruces's lucky number: they beat Gadsden with that score not once but twice on Friday. The Bulldawgs' pitcher stepped up to hand the Panthers an 8-0 shutout. The win continues a trend for the Bulldawgs in their matchups with the Panthers: they've now won eight in a row.

The result came thanks to Armando Gonzalez's shutout, as he gave up just four hits and racked up nine Ks. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two walks in six consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Las Cruces got a big performance out of Ryan Coryell, who went 1-for-3 with one home run and two RBI. That's the most RBI Coryell has posted since back in March. Isaiah Borunda also deserves some recognition as he hit his first triple of the season.

They weren't the only ones making solid contact: Las Cruces kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least eight hits in three consecutive contests.

Las Cruces' victory bumped their record up to 11-6. As for Gadsden, they are on a six-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 7-10.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Las Cruces will face off against Organ Mountain at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Knights' pitching crew has only allowed 3.2 runs per game this season, so the Bulldawgs' hitters will have their work cut out for them. As for Gadsden, they will host Centennial at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Panthers' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Hawks have averaged an impressive 11.9 runs per game this season.
