Recap: Y Yuma vs. Wray Eagles

The Y Yuma waltzed into their contest on Friday with ten straight wins but they left with 11. They managed a 58-53 win over Wray. Despite the win, that was the fewest points Y has scored all season.

Leading Y to victory were Jonathan Thomson and Brody Sheffield. Thomson dropped a double-double on 14 points and 18 rebounds, while Sheffield scored 25 points along with two steals. That makes it three consecutive games in which Sheffield has scored at least a third of Y's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Edwin Munoz, who scored eight points along with eight rebounds and four steals.

Despite the defeat, Wray had strong showings from AB Ruiz, who dropped a double-double on 16 points and 16 rebounds, and Rafael Trejo, who scored 21 points along with eight rebounds and two blocks. It was the first time this season that Trejo posted two or more blocks. Another player making a difference was Adonay Gonzalez, who scored six points.

Y pushed their record up to 11-1 with that win, which was their fourth straight on the road. As for Wray, their defeat ended a three-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 7-6.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Y will challenge the Panthers at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday. Peyton will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps Colorado Rankings (they are ranked 107th, while the Yuma are ranked 23rd). As for Wray, they will head out on the road to face off against the Spartans at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday. Hopefully Berthoud focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up nine on Thursday.
