Baseball Game Preview: Cotopaxi Pirates vs. Elbert Bulldogs

The Cotopaxi Pirates will venture away from home to face off against the Elbert Bulldogs at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. Cotopaxi is coming into the contest on a four-game losing streak.

Cotopaxi came up short against Cripple Creek-Victor on Tuesday, falling 9-2.

Cotopaxi saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Justin Dunn, who went 1-for-2 with two stolen bases and two runs.

Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Elbert). Everything went their way against Cripple Creek-Victor on Thursday as they made off with a 16-5 victory. The Bulldogs haven't had any issues with the Pioneers recently, as the game was their eighth consecutive win against them.

Matt Dooley was a standout: he went 2-for-3 with three runs, one triple, and two RBI. He continues to improve, besting his previous run total in each of the last three games he's played. Another player making a difference was Eli Cornell, who went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases, one triple, and one run.

Elbert always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .556. The last time their OBP was this high was back in April of 2024.

Cotopaxi's defeat dropped their record down to 1-4. As for Elbert, their record is now 3-6.

The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Monday as neither team is afraid to steal. Cotopaxi has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 4.8 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Elbert struggles in that department as they've been averaging 6.3 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.

Cotopaxi skirted past Elbert 3-1 in their previous meeting back in April of 2023. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Pirates since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
