Sulphur Springs gave their fans exactly what they wanted out of a home opener on Friday. They took their contest at home with ease, bagging a 68-17 victory over the Poteet Pirates. With the Wildcats ahead 40-10 at the half, the game was all but over already.

Sulphur Springs' success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Kyshaun John led the charge by rushing for 163 yards and two touchdowns on only 11 carries. John got the majority of those yards when he took off on a run and that went for an incredible85 yards. Another passer making a difference was Kaden Mitchell, who threw for 237 yards and four touchdowns while completing 76.5% of his passes.

Perhaps unsurprisingly given the score, Sulphur Springs was moving up and down the field and finished the game with 628 total yards. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Poteet only gained 248.

When it comes to explaining why Poteet lost, don't look at Gavyn Barcelo. Despite the final result, he threw for 134 yards and two touchdowns while completing 80% of his passes.

Sulphur Springs will venture away from home to face off against Greenville at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. The two teams are at an even 4-4 against one another since October of 2014. As for Poteet, they will square off against West Mesquite at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. Poteet will come in still looking for their first win of the season.
