Baseball Game Preview: Calaveras Red Hawks vs. Sonora Wildcats

The Calaveras Red Hawks will head out to square off against the Sonora Wildcats at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. Calaveras is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.3 runs per game this season.

Calaveras' pitching crew heads into the match hoping to repeat the dominance they displayed on Saturday. Everything went their way against Marina as Calaveras made off with a 12-0 win. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Red Hawks.

Evan Janssen made a splash no matter where he played. He kept things locked down with no earned runs or hits while striking out 12 over six innings pitched. The dominant performance also gave him a new career-low in hits (zero). He was also solid in the batter's box, scoring two runs while going 2-for-3. The dominant performance also gave him a new career-high in doubles (two).

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Cohen Curran, who scored two runs and stole Two bases. while getting on base in four of his five plate appearances. He is becoming a predictor of Calaveras' success: when he posts at least two runs the team is 2-1 (and 0-7 when he doesn't). The team also got some help courtesy of Mason Wehling, who scored a run while going 3-for-5.

Meanwhile, Sonora was not able to break out of their rough patch on Tuesday as the team picked up their 12th straight defeat dating back to last season. They came up short against Bret Harte, falling 12-2.

Jesse Morrison made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and scored two runs while going 2-for-3. He also hit a double, marking his first of the season.

Even though they lost, Sonora hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their strikeout total in three consecutive contests.

Sonora's loss dropped their record down to 0-7. As for Calaveras, their victory bumped their record up to 2-8.

Calaveras took their win against Sonora in their previous meeting back in April of 2024 by a conclusive 8-2. Does Calaveras have another victory up their sleeve, or will Sonora turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
