Baseball Game Preview: Nansemond-Suffolk Academy Saints vs. Steward Spartans

The Nansemond-Suffolk Academy Saints will square off against the Steward Spartans at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Nansemond-Suffolk Academy is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.2 runs per game this season.

Nansemond-Suffolk Academy barely beat Hampton Roads Academy the last time the pair played, but that sure wasn't the case this time around. The Saints put the hurt on the Navigators with a sharp 13-7 victory on Friday. The result was nothing new for the Saints, who have now won ten matches by six runs or more so far this season.

Gavin Angelillo was a major factor while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out eight batters over three innings while giving up just one earned run off two hits (and not a single walk). He has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than two hits in three consecutive appearances. He was also stellar in the batter's box, getting on base in five of his six plate appearances with one home run and two RBI. That's the most RBI he has posted since back in March.

In other batting news, Cam Bergen was a standout: he went 3-for-5 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI. That's the most hits he has posted since back in March of 2024. Another player making a difference was Chase Eliason, who went 1-for-3 with one home run and two RBI.

Nansemond-Suffolk Academy always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .531. They are a perfect 3-0 when they post an OBP of .513 or better.

Meanwhile, Steward might've scored the first runs on Saturday, but it was Highland who claimed the real prize. The Spartans fell just short of the Hawks by a score of 6-5.

The win made it two in a row for Nansemond-Suffolk Academy and bumps their season record up to 11-9. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 14.0 runs over those games. As for Steward, their loss was their fourth straight on the road, which dropped their record down to 9-8.

Nansemond-Suffolk Academy beat Steward 3-0 in their previous matchup back in May of 2024. Do the Saints have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Spartans turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
