Basketball Recap: Jayla Lockhart's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Columbus over Russell County

On Tuesday, the Columbus Blue Devils came up short against the Russell County Warriors and fell 70-57.

Several Blue Devils players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Jayla Lockhart, who went 5 for 6 on her way to 13 points and eight assists. Those eight assists gave Lockhart a new career-high. Harmony Franklin was another key player, putting up nine points along with five rebounds and three steals.

Russell County was led to victory by Mckenzie Word and Camyra Toney. Word posted 28 points and four steals, while Toney went 10 of 21 on her way to 25 points in addition to eight steals and six boards. That makes it eight consecutive games in which Word has scored at least a third of Russell County's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Khamani Herring-Proctor, who had six points along with 14 boards and three steals.

Columbus' loss ended a three-game streak of away wins and brought them to 5-4. As for Russell County, the win got them back to even at 6-6.

Coincidentally, the two teams will both be playing Northside the next time they take the court. Columbus will head out to face Northside at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, while Russell County will host them at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday.
