Basketball Game Preview: Whitefield Academy Wildcats vs. Sacred Heart Valkyries

The Whitefield Academy Wildcats will venture away from home to challenge the Sacred Heart Valkyries at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.

Sacred Heart will be up against a hot Whitefield Academy squad: the team just extended their winning streak to seven. Whitefield Academy took their contest on Saturday with ease, bagging a 68-35 victory over Holy Cross. Given the Wildcats' advantage in MaxPreps' Kentucky basketball rankings (they are ranked 68th, while the Cougars are ranked 204th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Whitefield Academy relied on the efforts of Noel Smith, who went 11-for-17 on her way to 28 points in addition to eight assists and six rebounds, and Gwynnie Franz, who went 7-for-11 from beyond the arc en route to 27 points and three steals. The match was Smith's fourth in a row with at least 18 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Riley Ring, who posted ten points.

Sacred Heart's found some homefield redemption this week after a overtime loss to Simon Kenton on Saturday. Sacred Heart really took it to Holy Cross for the full four quarters, racking up an 84-49 win.

Sacred Heart's win came from a few key players Whitefield Academy will need to keep an eye on. One of the most notable was Amirah 'Tootie' Jordan, who went 9-for-14 to rack up 22 points and four steals. She has been hot recently, having posted two or more steals the last four times she's played. Another player making a difference was ZaKiyah Johnson, who went 8-for-10 on her way to 20 points along with eight boards and three steals.

Whitefield Academy's victory was their 13th straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 22-6. Those victories came thanks in part to their defensive effort, having only surrendered 23.2 points over those games. As for Sacred Heart, they are on a roll lately: they've won 18 of their last 19 games, which provided a nice bump to their 23-3 record this season.
