Basketball Recap: Santa Rita Takes a Loss

After flying high against St. John Paul II Catholic last Friday, Santa Rita came back down to earth. The Santa Rita Eagles took a hard 64-46 fall against the Rio Rico Hawks on Wednesday. The loss continues a trend for the Eagles in their matchups with the Hawks: they've now lost three in a row.

Despite the loss, Santa Rita still got an impressive performance from David Gonzales, who dropped a double-double on 23 points and 12 boards. Gonzales' evening made it three games in a row in which he has scored at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Vernon Johnson JR, who went 5 of 10 on his way to 12 points and five assists.

Santa Rita's defeat dropped their record down to 3-5. As for Rio Rico, they moved to 1-11 with that win, which also ended their 12-game losing streak.

Santa Rita won't have much time to rest: their next match is against Flowing Wells at 12:00 p.m. on Thursday. Santa Rita is facing Flowing Wells at the right time seeing as Flowing Wells is stuck on a six-game losing streak. As for Rio Rico, they will have some time to savor their victory since their next game is a little ways off: they'll take on Walden Grove at 7:00 p.m. on January 7, 2025.
