Recap: Mountain Brook Spartans vs. Baker Hornets
On Thursday, the Mountain Brook Spartans faced the Baker Hornets in a battle between two of the state's top teams. Mountain Brook fell 37-28 to Baker. Mountain Brook was given a dose of their own medicine in this game as Baker apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in October of 2022.
Despite the loss, Mountain Brook still got an impressive performance from Cole Gamble, who rushed for 138 yards and four touchdowns while picking up 7.3 yards per carry. Gamble is on a roll when it comes to rushing yards, as he's now rushed for 100 or more in the last five games he's played.
Josh Flowers was his usual excellent self, rushing for 238 yards and two touchdowns while picking up 9.5 yards per carry, and also throwing for 187 yards and a touchdown. Flowers hasn't dropped below 100 rushing yards for six straight games. Another player making a difference was Kevin Beckham Jr., who picked up 142 receiving yards and a touchdown.
Special teams played a big role in the game for Baker, adding 13 points to the final score. All those points came courtesy of Blayne Munson: he added nine points with three field goals, and another four kicking extra points.
Mountain Brook's loss dropped their record down to 7-3. As for Baker, the victory makes it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 8-2.
Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Mountain Brook will take on Buckhorn at 7:00 p.m. on November 10th. Buckhorn will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps Alabama Rankings (they are ranked 138th, while Mountain Brook is ranked 23rd). As for Baker, they will look to defend their home field on November 10th against Auburn at 7:00 p.m. Auburn is looking to tack on another W to their five-game streak on the road.
