Basketball Game Preview: El Capitan Eagles vs. Grand Canyon Phantoms

El Capitan and Grand Canyon are an even 5-5 against one another since December of 2014, but not for long. The El Capitan Eagles will host the Grand Canyon Phantoms at 1:00 p.m. on Friday. Both come into the matchup bolstered by wins in their previous matches.

El Capitan is headed in fresh off scoring the most points they have all season. They blew past BASIS Flagstaff 54-12 on Saturday. The team's explosion on offense also rewarded the Eagles with their most commanding win of the season.

El Capitan's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Ruth Timpson led the charge by going 8 for 17 on her way to 18 points and five steals. Tamara Timpson was another key player, going 7 of 11 on her way to 14 points along with five boards and four steals.

El Capitan smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 22 offensive boards. That's the most offensive rebounds they've managed all season.

Grand Canyon played in conference for the first time on Tuesday and they got just the result they we're looking for. They walked away with a 37-30 victory over Music Mountain. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Phantoms.

The win got El Capitan back to even at 4-4. As for Grand Canyon, their victory ended a four-game drought on the road dating back to last season and puts them at 3-3.

El Capitan came out on top in a nail-biter against Grand Canyon in their previous meeting back in January of 2022, sneaking past 35-33. Does El Capitan have another victory up their sleeve, or will Grand Canyon turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
