Basketball Game Preview: Irvin Rockets vs. Clint Lions

Irvin hasn't had much luck against Clint recently, but that could start to change on Tuesday. The Irvin Rockets will be playing at home against the Clint Lions at 6:00 p.m. The two teams are strolling into their games after big wins in their previous games.

Irvin took a loss when they played away from home last Friday, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed on Tuesday. They took their matchup with ease, bagging a 56-25 win over Harmony Science Academy. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest victory the Rockets have posted since November 5, 2024.

Jazlyn Burciaga and Jayanna Rascon were among the main playmakers for Irvin as the former went 7 for 12 on her way to 19 points and five steals and the latter went 6 of 12 en route to 20 points. The dominant performance gave Burciaga a new career-high in points. The team also got some help courtesy of Mia Enriquez, who posted two points along with nine assists, seven rebounds, and five steals.

Irvin was working as a unit and finished the game with 15 assists. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Harmony Science Academy only posted eight assists.

Meanwhile, you can't lose the game if you win every quarter, and that was precisely Clint's strategy against Ysleta on Tuesday. Clint blew past Ysleta 52-28. The Lions have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won ten contests by 21 points or more this season.

Clint had a senior duo take command as Chloe Arredondo almost dropped a double-double on 19 points and nine boards and Anabella Portillo put up eight points in addition to 12 rebounds and four steals. Portillo has been hot recently, having posted two or more steals the last three times she's played. Annika Rueda was another key player, putting up nine points.

Irvin's win bumped their record up to 10-18. As for Clint, their victory bumped their record up to 21-9.

Irvin took a serious blow against Clint in their previous matchup back in December of 2023, falling 48-18. Can Irvin avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
