Volleyball Game Preview: Eastern Comets vs. Southwood Knights

Eastern hasn't had much luck against Southwood recently, but that could start to change on Saturday. The Comets will face off against the Knights at 11:00 a.m. Both teams are coming into the matchup red-hot, with Eastern sitting on 12 straight victories and Southwood on three.

Eastern took a three-set defeat the last time they faced off against Rossville, but this time they managed to keep it close and that made all the difference. The Comets had just enough and edged out the Hornets 2-1 on Saturday. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Comets have posted since August 24, 2024.

Eastern can attribute much of their success to Savannah Smith, who had 15 assists and three digs. Smith has been hot, having posted 13 or more assists the last eight times she's played.

Meanwhile, two teams were on the hunt for playoff glory, but only Southwood walked away with it. They put the hurt on the Squires with a sharp 3-0 victory on Tuesday.

Eastern better keep an eye on Presley Kroft. She was instrumental in Southwood's win, getting 15 digs and two aces. Those 15 digs gave Kroft a new career-high.

Eastern's win bumped their record up to 24-7. As for Southwood, their victory bumped their record up to 27-3.

Here's a few offensive stats to keep an eye on ahead of Saturday's contest: Eastern has really dialed in their serving this season, having averaged 8.7 aces per game. However, it's not like Southwood struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 8.2 aces. Given these competing strengths, it'll be interesting to see how their clash plays out.

Eastern might still be hurting after the 3-0 loss they got from Southwood when the teams last played back in August. Can the Comets avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
