Softball Recap: Independence Takes a Loss

Independence had lost three straight on the road, but on Thursday they dropped down to 19-9 to make it four. They fell 5-0 to the Hurricane Redskins. Having soared to a lofty 20 runs in the game before, the Patriots' shutout was a dramatic turnaround.

As for Hurricane, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won six of their last seven games. That's provided a nice bump to their 14-9 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.1 runs on average over those games.

For Hurricane's part, not much got past Kate Justice, who gave up just three hits and racked up 12 Ks to keep Independence off the board. Justice has been consistent: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in six consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Hurricane saw six different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Sophie Dunlap, who went 1-for-2 with one run and one RBI. Madelynn Alford was another, going 2-for-3 with two RBI and one double.

The teams didn't have to wait long for a rematch: Hurricane beat Independence by a score of 10-3 later that day.
