Baseball Recap: Rifle Bears vs. Basalt Longhorns
Rifle had lost four straight on the road, but on Tuesday they dropped their record down to 8-9 to make it five. They lost 11-1 to the Basalt Longhorns. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Longhorns this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 14-11 back in March.
Rifle saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Baden Phillips, who went 2-for-3 with one stolen base.
As for Basalt, the victory snapped their losing streak at three games and leaves them with a 9-7 record. Considering they have won six games by more than six runs this season, Tuesday's blowout was nothing new.
On Basalt's side, Karson Schneider spent all six innings played on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered a run (which was unearned) on four hits. Schneider also tossed no earned runs, which is notable because the Longhorns are undefeated when he allows at most one earned run, but 6-7 otherwise.
On the hitting side, Basalt let Elias Schendler and Chris Hays run wild. Schendler went 2-for-4 with two runs, two doubles, and two RBI, while Hays went a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs and one RBI. That's the most hits Hays has posted since April 2nd. Connor Anthes also deserves some recognition as he scored his first run of the season.
Coming up, Rifle will be playing at home against Roaring Fork at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The Bears are facing the Rams at the right time seeing as the Rams are stuck on a three-game losing streak. As for Basalt, they will venture away from home to square off against Delta at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday. The Panthers will roll in looking for their 11th straight win, something the Longhorns surely won't give up without a fight.
