Girard is 6-1 against Corry since April of 2016 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Wednesday. The Yellowjackets will square off against the Beavers at 4:00 p.m. Girard is coming into the contest on a four-game losing streak.
On Monday, Girard came up short against Fairview and fell 7-3.
Levi Potter made the most of his time in the batter's box despite the final result and went 1-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double. That double was his first of the season. The team also got some help courtesy of Joe Ferretti, who went 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI.
Meanwhile, there's no place like home for Corry, who bounced back after a loss on the road on Friday. They came out on top against Conneaut Area by a score of 6-1 on Monday.
Wyatt Swan made a splash while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, tossing two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. He is becoming a predictor of Corry's success: when he allows at most two hits the team is 2-1 (and 4-6 when he doesn't). Swan was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two runs and one double.
In other pitching news, Corry got a great performance from Bryce Chelton as he tossed five innings while giving up just one earned run off four hits. Chelton has become a key player for the Beavers: the team is undefeated when he allows at most two earned runs, but 3-7 otherwise.
Back at the plate, Tucker Jackson was incredible, going 2-for-3 with three RBI, one triple, and one stolen base. That's the most hits he has posted since back in March.
Corry's victory was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 6-7. The home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 4.0 runs on average over those games. As for Girard, their loss dropped their record down to 5-5.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Wednesday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Girard has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 8.2 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Corry struggles in that department as they've been averaging 7.8 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Girard was able to grind out a solid victory over Corry in their previous meeting two weeks ago, winning 4-0. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Yellowjackets since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
