Basketball Recap: Cheraw Takes a Loss

Cheraw was the 57-52 winner over Central when they last played one another back in January of 2024, but their luck changed this time around. The Cheraw Braves fell 68-61 to the Central Eagles on Thursday.

When it comes to explaining why Cheraw lost, don't look at De'Shaun Drake. Despite the final result, he went 9 of 15 en route to 25 points and eight rebounds. The dominant performance gave Drake a new career-high in points. The team also got some help courtesy of Anthony Strong, who almost dropped a double-double on nine points and 11 rebounds.

Even though they lost, Cheraw smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 18 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least nine offensive rebounds in three consecutive matches.

Central's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Demetrius Myers, who posted 25 points. With that strong performance, Myers is now averaging an impressive 16 points per game. Another player making a difference was Caden Edmond, who almost dropped a double-double on 14 points and nine rebounds.

Cheraw's defeat dropped their record down to 6-8. As for Central, they are on a roll lately: they've won eight of their last ten contests, which provided a nice bump to their 9-7 record this season.

The future could be bright for both Cheraw and Central: their next opponents haven't had the best luck recently. Cheraw will try to hand Chesterfield their fourth-straight loss when the two meet at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Similarly, Central will try to hand Buford their fifth-straight defeat when the two meet at 7:45 p.m. on Tuesday.
