Basketball Recap: Independence Comes Up Short

Independence extended their losing streak to three on Friday, dropping them down to 5-13. They took a blow against the Stafford Indians, falling 70-30. Independence was in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 41-16.

As for Stafford, with the win, they broke their three-game losing streak and moved their record to 11-7. They have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won seven matchups by 24 points or more this season.

Kalaia Handy was her usual excellent self, going 8-for-17 to rack up 23 points in addition to five boards and five steals. She is becoming a predictor of Stafford's success: when she posts at least three steals the team is 8-3 (and 3-4 when she doesn't). Ta'Layah Davis also deserves some recognition as she scored her first point of the season.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming contests. Independence will challenge Battlefield at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Stafford, they will take on Brooke Point at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
