Basketball Recap: Estancia Takes a Loss

Estancia was not able to break out of their rough patch on Thursday as the team picked up their ninth straight defeat. They were beaten by the Pecos Panthers 68-39. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Bears of the 64-26 loss they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in December of 2023.

Defeat or not, Estancia got some senior leadership from Olavio Hernandez and Justin Rubio. Hernandez went 5 of 9 on his way to 15 points, while Rubio almost dropped a double-double on 15 points and nine boards. Those 15 points gave Hernandez a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Luis Perea, who posted four points.

Even though they lost, Estancia smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 11 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive rebounds in four consecutive matchups.

Estancia's record is now 5-16. As for Pecos, they are on a roll lately: they've won seven of their last eight contests, which provided a massive bump to their 12-9 record this season.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Estancia will venture away from home to challenge Raton at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday. Raton has been dominant on offense recently, having racked up an incredible 195 points over their last three games. As for Pecos, they will head out to face off against Tucumcari at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday. The timing isn't great for Tucumcari: they have been struggling with five straight losses at home, while Pecos has snatched up three consecutive wins on the road.
