Softball Preview: Marion Giants vs. Southwood Knights

The Marion Giants will head out on the road to challenge the Southwood Knights at 5:00 p.m. on Friday. Marion will come in still looking for their first win of the season.

Marion lost 24-16 to Northfield on Thursday.

Lamariya Cannon and Jakira Jones did some serious damage despite the final result: Cannon scored three runs while going 3-for-4, while Jones scored three runs while going 2-for-4. The team also got some help courtesy of Desiray Alexander, who scored two runs while going 2-for-4.

Even though they lost, Marion was hitting in the alleys and finished the game with three doubles. That's the most doubles they've managed all season.

Meanwhile, Southwood stacked a fourth blowout win onto their ever-increasing hoard on Monday. Everything went their way against Peru as Southwood made off with a 7-1 victory.

Natalie Sutphin was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run while striking out nine over seven innings pitched. Sutphin has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't pitched less than six innings in three consecutive pitching appearances. Sutphin was also big at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a triple and an RBI.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Grace Lambert, who went 1-for-4 with a home run and three RBI. Another player making a difference was Lili Combs, who went 2-for-2 with two stolen bases and two RBI.

Marion's loss dropped their record down to 0-5. As for Southwood, their win bumped their record up to 8-2.

Both the pair just can't seem to miss. Marion has been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 8.8 hits per game. However, it's not like Southwood struggles in that department as they've been averaging only 5.1. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.

Marion came out on top in a nail-biter against Southwood when the teams last played back in April of 2021, sneaking past 11-9. The rematch might be a little tougher for Marion since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
