Football Recap: Melbourne Bulldogs vs. Merritt Island Mustangs
After flying high against Cocoa Beach last Friday, Melbourne came back down to earth. The Bulldogs came up short against the Merritt Island Mustangs on Friday, falling 42-21. The Bulldogs haven't had much luck with the Mustangs recently, as the team has come up short the last three times they've met.
Melbourne's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Tyrese Jefferson, who rushed for 44 yards and a pair of TDs.
Don't try to pin the team's loss on the defense: they kept the trenches locked down and allowed a mere 3.3 yards per carry. While three picked up at least ten total tackles, Tyler Gagen stood above the rest. He forced one fumble and made ten total tackles. Melbourne's ground attack was stronger, having averaged 4.5.
A big part of Merritt Island's victory came down to the chemistry between Kevin Verpaele and his top target Donterrius Robinson Jr.. Verpaele threw for 295 yards and three touchdowns while completing 78.6% of his passes while Robinson Jr. picked up 136 receiving yards and a pair of scores. What's more, Robinson Jr. posted two receiving touchdowns, the most he's had since back in September of 2024. Alain Adams was in the mix too, providing Merritt Island with two TDs.
Melbourne's defeat dropped their record down to 1-1. As for Merritt Island, the win also got them back to even at 1-1.
