Basketball Game Preview: Tonopah Valley Phoenix vs. Yuma Catholic Shamrocks

Tonopah Valley is 0-9 against Yuma Catholic since January of 2015 but things could change on Friday. The Tonopah Valley Phoenix will venture away from home to take on the Yuma Catholic Shamrocks at 7:00 p.m.

Tonopah Valley is coming in off a wild two-game stretch: after soaring to 73 points on Saturday, they were much more limited against Parker on Tuesday. They were outmatched by the Broncs and fell 76-24. While losing is never fun, the Phoenix can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Arizona basketball rankings (they are ranked 311th, while the Broncs are ranked 100th).

Meanwhile, Yuma Catholic came tearing into Tuesday's matchup with seven straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 9.9 points) and they left with even more momentum. They breezed by the Minotaur to the tune of 78-17. The Shamrocks' offense stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most points they've scored all season.

Yuma Catholic has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won ten of their last 11 games, which provided a nice bump to their 13-2 record this season. Those victories came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 59.5 points per game. As for Tonopah Valley, their defeat dropped their record down to 3-11.

Tonopah Valley was taken down by Yuma Catholic 83-39 when the teams last played back in January of 2024. Can Tonopah Valley avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
