Basketball Game Preview: Gruver Greyhounds vs. Floydada Whirlwinds

The Gruver Greyhounds will take on the Floydada Whirlwinds at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, the two teams will really light up the scoreboard.

Gruver is on a roll after a high-stakes playoff matchup on Monday. They breezed past Clarendon to the tune of 68-34. The Greyhounds have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won 11 matches by 20 points or more this season.

Farwell typically has all the answers at home, but on Tuesday Floydada proved too difficult a challenge. They came out on top against the Steers by a score of 65-55. The win continues a trend for the Whirlwinds in their matchups with the Steers: they've now won three in a row.

Floydada's win came from a few key players Gruver will need to keep an eye on. One of the most notable was Sergio Valadez, who went 9-for-16 on his way to 25 points. What's more, he also posted an 83% three-point shooting accuracy, which is the highest he's achieved since back in January of 2024. Another player making a difference was Tyrean Henderson, who went 6-for-13 to rack up 17 points along with six boards and four steals.

Floydada pushed their record up to 23-11 with the victory, which was their fourth straight on the road. Those victories came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 82.8 points over those games. As for Gruver, their win bumped their record up to 17-1.

Gruver came up short against Floydada when the teams last played back in December of 2023, falling 62-56. Can Gruver avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
