Softball Recap: Champaign Central Maroons vs. Mattoon Greenwave
Champaign Central made up a huge gap compared to their last game against Mattoon, but they still couldn't quite topple them. The Maroons blew past the Greenwave 14-4 on Monday. Considering the Maroons have won seven contests by more than nine runs this season, Monday's blowout was nothing new.
Haley Helm made a splash no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out eight batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned (and three unearned) runs off seven hits (and not a single walk). She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in seven consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, firing off two home runs and seven RBI while going 3-for-4. What's more, she posted two runs, the most she's had since back in April of 2024.
In other batting news, Grace Bandy was incredible, scoring a run while going 4-for-5. That's the most hits she has posted since back in March of 2024. Another player making a difference was Jaila Davis, who scored a run and stole a base while going 2-for-4.
Champaign Central was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .436. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Mattoon only posted a batting average of .214.

The victory keeps Champaign Central at an undefeated 9-0. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they've averaged 13.1 runs this season. As for Mattoon, their loss dropped their record down to 4-6.
