Softball Game Preview: Berwyn/Cicero Morton Mustangs vs. Proviso East Pirates

Berwyn/Cicero Morton is a perfect 10-0 against Proviso East since May of 2017 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Monday. The Mustangs will face off against the Pirates at 4:30 p.m. Berwyn/Cicero Morton's hitters haven't had much luck over their past three matchups, but Monday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.

Berwyn/Cicero Morton will bounce into Monday's contest after beating Addison Trail, who they had gone 0-9 against in their nine prior meetings. The Mustangs came out on top in a nail-biter against the Blazers on Friday, sneaking past 1-0.

Alyssa Kunz was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, keeping things locked down with no earned runs or hits while striking out 13 over seven innings pitched. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in 11 consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 3-for-4 with one RBI. Those three hits gave her a new career-high.

Meanwhile, Proviso East was not able to break out of their rough patch on Saturday as the team picked up their 11th straight defeat. They lost 17-2 to Fenton.

Proviso East saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Isabella Corral, who went 1-for-2 with one double and one RBI. That RBI marked the first that Corral has brought in this season.

Proviso East's loss dropped their record down to 1-13. As for Berwyn/Cicero Morton, their win bumped their record up to 7-9.

Proviso East's hitters will have their work cut out for them on Monday. Berwyn/Cicero Morton has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 8.4 strikeouts per game. It's a different story for Proviso East, though, as they've been averaging only 3.4 strikeouts. Will Berwyn/Cicero Morton keep running through batters, or will the Pirates buck the trend?

Everything went Berwyn/Cicero Morton's way against Proviso East when the teams last played back in May of 2024, as Berwyn/Cicero Morton made off with a 19-4 victory. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Mustangs since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
