Softball Preview: Whitley County Colonels vs. South Laurel Cardinals

Whitley County hasn't had much luck against South Laurel recently, but that could start to change on Thursday. The Colonels will head out to take on the Cardinals at 6:00 p.m. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, these teams will really light up the scoreboard.

As a matter of fact, Whitley County put up the most runs they have all season on Tuesday. They blew past Barbourville 19-4. With that win, the Colonels brought their scoring average up to 6.8 runs per game.

Caylee Singleton made a big impact no matter where she played. On the mound, she didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit while striking out nine over four innings pitched. That's the most strikeouts she has posted since back in March. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with one double and one RBI.

In other batting news, Morgan Huddleston was incredible, going 2-for-3 with one home run, three runs, and three RBI. Payton Hurst was another key player, scoring three runs and stealing two bases while going 2-for-3.

Whitley County hit smart and finished the game with only one strikeout. The team has now struck out at least four batters in three consecutive contests.

Like Whitley County, South Laurel also got a great game from a two-way player: Audrey Likins. She tossed three innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Likins has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than one hit in three consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, scoring a run.

In other batting news, South Laurel let Kenzie Williams and Bailey Frazier run wild. Williams scored two runs and stole a base while going 1-for-2, while Frazier scored three runs and stole a base while getting on base in all three of her plate appearances. Those runs were Williams' first of the season. Another player making a difference was Morgan Jackson, who scored three runs while getting on base in two of her three plate appearances.

South Laurel is on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five games. That's provided a nice bump to their 8-3 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 11.2 runs over those games. As for Whitley County, their record now sits at 6-10.
