Baseball Recap: Los Lunas Comes Up Short

If Los Lunas was riding high fresh off their 11-1 takedown of Clovis last Saturday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Los Lunas Tigers fell just short of the Cleveland Storm by a score of 4-3 on Thursday. The Tigers haven't had much luck with the Storm recently, as the team has come up short the last three times they've met.

Matthew Castillo was huge while hitting and pitching even without the win. He didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit while striking out 11 over six innings pitched. That's the most strikeouts he has posted since back in March of 2024. He was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with one stolen base and one RBI. That stolen base was his first of the season.

Castillo wasn't the only one making solid contact as three players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was JJ Utash, who scored a run while going 1-for-4. Utash also hit a double, marking his first of the season.

Los Lunas' loss dropped their record down to 2-2. As for Cleveland, the victory keeps them at an undefeated 4-0.

Looking ahead, Los Lunas will be taking part in a tournament against Belen at 5:00 p.m. on Friday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average, (Los Lunas: 3.5, Belen: 2.2) so any runs scored will be well earned. As for Cleveland, they are headed away from home for the first time to square off against Hobbs at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Cleveland's pitching crew has only allowed 2.5 runs per game this season, so Hobbs' hitters will have their work cut out for them.
