Baseball Game Preview: Friona Chieftans vs. Denver City Mustangs

The Friona Chieftans will head out on the road to face off against the Denver City Mustangs at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday.

Last Monday, Friona came up short against Olton and fell 8-3. The game marked the Chieftans' lowest-scoring match so far this season.

Friona got a good showing from Mason Ramos, who pitched four innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off four hits.

At the plate, Aiden Tafoya and Owen McGaughy stepped up to the plate in a big way. Tafoya scored a run and stole three bases while getting on base in two of his four plate appearances, while McGaughy went 3-for-4 with one stolen base and two RBI.

Meanwhile, Denver City hadn't done well against Shallowater recently (they were 2-7 in their previous nine matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Saturday. Denver City narrowly escaped with a victory as the team sidled past Shallowater 5-3. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win Denver City has posted since May 3, 2024.

Friona's defeat was their seventh straight on the road dating back to last season, which dropped their record down to 1-4. As for Denver City, the victory got them back to even at 2-2.

Friona might still be hurting after the 18-2 loss they got from Denver City in their previous matchup back in March of 2024. Can Friona avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
