Baseball Game Preview: Hammond Morton Governors vs. Whiting Oilers

The Hammond Morton Governors will venture away from home to square off against the Whiting Oilers at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. Hammond Morton is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.6 runs per game this season.

Hammond Morton will roll into the game after a wild two-game stretch: they only put up one run on Monday, then bounced right back against Hammond Central on Tuesday. The Governors blew past the Wolves 13-3. The Governors haven't had any issues with the Wolves recently, as the game was their third consecutive win against them.

David Shreve made a big impact no matter where he played. On the mound, he struck out six batters over five innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off four hits. That's the most strikeouts he has posted over his last four contests. He was also big at the plate, going 1-for-3 with two runs, two RBI, and one double.

In other batting news, Nate George was incredible, going a perfect 3-for-3 with four stolen bases, three RBI, and two runs. He has become a key player for Hammond Morton: the team is 4-2 when he posts at least two stolen bases, but 3-9 otherwise. Another player making a difference was Aiden Vibert, who went 2-for-4 with three RBI, one triple, and one double.

Hammond Morton always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .595. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their OBP total in three consecutive matches.

Meanwhile, Whiting was not able to break out of their rough patch on Tuesday as the team picked up their 12th straight defeat. They lost 9-0 to Illiana Christian.

Hammond Morton's record is now 7-11. As for Whiting, their loss dropped their record down to 1-14.

Hammond Morton came out on top in a nail-biter against Whiting in their previous meeting back in May of 2024, sneaking past 10-9. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Governors since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
