Basketball Recap: Carter Selensky's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Oakley over Hoxie

Oakley fought the good fight in their overtime contest against Hoxie on Monday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Hoxie Indians by a score of 57-55. While losing is never fun, the Plainsmen can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Kansas basketball rankings (they are ranked 247th, while the Indians are ranked 120th).

Oakley's defeat came despite a true team effort with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Carter Selensky, who posted 17 points. Those 17 points gave Selensky a new career-high. Manuel Mancia was another key player, putting up 14 points.

Oakley has been struggling recently as they've lost three of their last four games, which has put a noticeable dent in their 7-11 record this season. As for Hoxie, the win was the fifth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 11-5.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Oakley will challenge Ellis at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Hoxie, they won't have much time to rest: their next matchup is against Trego at 7:05 p.m. on Tuesday. Hoxie is facing Trego at the right time seeing as Trego is stuck on a five-game losing streak.
