Softball Recap: Michigan City Wolves vs. Portage Indians
Michigan City extended their losing streak (dating back to last season) to 12 on Wednesday, dropping their season record down to 0-9 in the process. They came up short against the Portage Indians, falling 18-2. If the Wolves were looking for revenge after losing 20-15 to the Indians when the teams met back in May of 2024, then they'll just have to keep looking.
Michigan City saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Ann Sawyer, who went 2-for-3 with one run and one double.
As for Portage, their win ended a four-game drought at home and bumped them up to 4-6. The high-scoring effort was just what they needed considering they were shut out in their previous game.
On Portage's side, Elisea Orozco made a big impact while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she pitched three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. The dominant performance also gave Orozco a new career-high in strikeouts (three). She was also big at the plate, going a perfect 1-for-1 with one run and one RBI.
In other batting news, Portage got a massive performance out of Cora Kingrey, who went 2-for-3 with one home run, four RBI, and two runs. That's the most RBI Kingrey has posted since back in May of 2024. Savannah Riley was another key player, going 2-for-3 with four runs, two doubles, and one stolen base.
Looking ahead, Michigan City will look to defend their home field on Thursday against South Bend Riley at 5:30 p.m. As for Portage, they will head out on the road to face off against Merrillville at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
