League recap: Gomez throws longest pass in league this season for Clearwater Central Catholic

Blake Gomez and Trey Larry provided fans with a highlight when they connected against Cardinal Mooney. The longest such play in 3A District 5 this season, the connection resulted in 81 yards.

Tampa Catholic extended the longest winning streak in the league this week by beating Lake Highland Prep, 52-14. The victory was the fifth in a row for the Crusaders.

Chris Williams was the most productive running back in the league this week. He ran for 228 yards on 31 carries as Berkeley Prep defeated Lennard. Teammate Addison Grams added to the ground attack by rushing for 14 yards.

Olivera was the best wideout in 3A District 5 this week as the Buccaneers beat the Longhorns. Olivera racked up three receptions for 99 yards. Matt Miller helped Berkeley Prep's passing attack out by catching one ball for 10 yards.

Kyle Ploucher put up the best numbers through the air as Tampa Catholic bested the Highlanders. He finished with a total of 16 completions for 225 yards and three touchdowns. Ploucher's favorite target this week was Zach Benjamin, who caught five passes for 80 yards.

6-foot-0 quarterback Ploucher of Bob Henriquez's team is the league leader in passing yards this season with 723. He has also thrown nine touchdowns. On the ground, Berkeley Prep's Williams has rushed for 643 yards which leads the league. The leading receiver in the league this season is Olivera. The Berkeley Prep star has 15 catches for 374 yards.

A big matchup in the league this week will be when Clearwater Central Catholic takes on the Crusaders. At the moment, the Marauders are in third, while Tampa Catholic is in first.

The top two defenses in the league will face off this season when Clearwater Central Catholic takes on the Crusaders. John Davis's team has allowed 43 points this season, while Tampa Catholic has given up 36. The Marauders allowed 7 points last week as they defeated the Cougars.

The Crusaders moved up to 92 from 121 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in the league. Tampa Catholic was able to make the jump by beating Lake Highland Prep 52-14.
